What is a Medical Transcriptionist?

Certified Medical Transcriptionists (CMTs)*, following prescribed and established document formats, transcribe or convert recorded dictations by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into a written text. These documents are the primary mechanism by which physicians, hospitals, and other medical professionals communicate patient record information with other physicians, insurance companies, etc. CMT’s also edit dictated material for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and clarity.

The medical support services sector of the healthcare industry continues to experience steady growth and has been virtually immune to recession – the demand for medical services, and, therefore, the demand for all related products and services, such as for professional Medical Transcriptionists, has never diminished. Such job security is difficult to find in any other field.

*The CMT requires at least two years of acute care-type setting, or equivalent experience, in a multi-specialty environment. Or, for those who do not have the required experience for the CMT, the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) is a viable alternative.
